Aston Martin’s SUV – DBX Unveiled

November 20, 2019, Beijing, China – Aston Martin has launched its first sports utility vehicle (SUV) – DBX in Beijing, China.

The development of DBX started in 2015, and it was last year, the development programme began their physical testing in Wales.

“I can’t emphasis enough how incredibly exciting and significant DBX is for Aston Martin. Through its development alone, this beautiful SUV has already taken the company into new territories and in inspiring directions.

“DBX also marks a key moment in the delivery of the third and final phase of our Second Century Plan, not only representing the promised expansion of our portfolio but also signaling the start of production at Aston Martin’s second manufacturing plant. We have both delivered this model through our expertise, but also by garnering invaluable experience and knowledge from external counsel, including our Female Advisory Board.

“This is a real landmark for this great British brand and i promise that DBX will reward all who experience it in their everyday lives,” said Aston Martin Lagonda president and group chief executive officer Dr. Andy Palmer in a statement.

The DBX was set to built in Aston Martin’s purpose-built manufacturing facility in St Athan, Wales, with a new dedicated SUV platform utilising bonded aluminium, a construction method the company has refined through the development of its sport car. It makes the body structure very light and incredibly stiff, which contributed to the kerbweight of 2,245 kg. The new platform also enabled DBX to achieve exceptional dynamics both on and off-road.

Powering the DBX is the 4-litre twin turbocharge V8 engine, similar to the one available on the DB11 and Vantage. It is hooked on the nine-speed torque converter automatic gearbox, allied to an all-wheel drive system with active differentials, featuring an active central differential and an electronic rear limited slip differential (eDiff).

DBX generates an output of 542 hp and 700 Nm of torque. It can sprint from zero to 100kph in 4.5 seconds and the top speed is rated at 291 kph.

Some of the five-seater SUV key features include the adaptive triple volume air suspension, 48v electric anti-roll control system, electronic adaptive dampers, a 632 litres of boot space, active safety system, handcrafted interior, glass panoramic roof, frameless doors, sports car seats, leather upholstery, metal, glass and wood trims, 10.25-inch TFT screen at the centre console, 12.3-inch TFT instrument cluster, 360-degree camera system, 64 colours ambient lighting, signature DB grille, daytime running lights, among others.

The recommended retail price for the DBX is priced at £158,000 (including a 3 years servicing) in the UK, €193,500 in Germany and $189,900 in USA. The first deliveries is scheduled to begin in second quarter of 2020.

Further adding to the disirability of the DBX, the first 500 owners of this landmark model will benefit from an exclusive ‘1913 Package’. Fitted with a unique fender badge, sill plaques and an inspection plaque detailing its limited build-run. Each of these first examples will be personally endorsed and inspected by Andy Palmer.

In addition, each customer will also receive a unique build-book signed by both Aston Martin’s chief executive officer and chief creative officer Marek Reichman, as well as an invitation to a regionally hosted Waldorf Astoria celebration cocktail party, hosted by a member of the Aston Martin Lagonda executive team.

“DBX will give many people their first experience of Aston Martin ownership. As such it needed to be true to the core values established in our sports cars, while also providing the lifestyle versatility expected of a luxury SUV.

“To have produced such a beautiful, hand built, yet technologically advanced car is a proud moment for Aston Martin,” said Palmer.

11 Things You Should Know About The New Corvette Stingray

Apart from the fact it looks amazing.

It has been a long time coming and Chevrolet has done a great job, much to our annoyance, of keeping tight-lipped on the next generation of the Corvette. Short of knowing the drivetrain layout would be a departure from the last seven generations’ front-engine to rear-wheel-drive setup, details have been scarce. However, last night Chevrolet pulled the covers off and we were there to see the reveal in Orange County, California. Following on from that, here’s everything you should know about the new C8-generation 2020 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray.

5

1. It’s Mid-Engined, But That’s Not A New Idea

The Corvette had reached an insane level of performance with the C7 generation. At this point, the only thing holding it back from having better balance and handling is moving the engine to the middle for better weight distribution. While many people appear to have problem with the break in tradition, the grandfather of the modern Corvette, Zora Arkus-Duntov, pushed hard for the Corvette to have its engine mounted in the middle. Just before his retirement in 1974 Duntov made one last campaign to get the engine mounted mid-ship, but was scuppered by technical problems.1You Might Also LikeWhy Are So Many People Selling Their Porsche 911 GT2 RS?7 Cheaper Alternatives To The 2020 Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 & 718 Spyder

2. It Has A New Engine

The mid-mounted engine is a 6.2-liter V8 called the LT2, despite having the same fundamental geometry and most of its internals from the previous LT1. It makes 495 horsepower and 470 pound-feet of torque. That gives it an extra 40 horsepower and 10 lb-ft of torque over the LT1 engine in the current generation of Corvette. Peak torque arrives at 5,150 rpm and the rev limiter shows as the same 6,600 rpm as the current Corvette.

3. There’s No Manual Transmission Available… Yet

The C8 Corvette will ship with a new eight-speed dual-clutch transmission, but there’s no hint of a manual transmission becoming available. There has been a huge outcry across social media but the reality is that the C8 is a huge push forward in performance and, no matter how good you may be with a stick, a dual-clutch auto will be faster and give more control. That doesn’t mean there won’t be one available later, but we don’t recommend people hold their breath. It’s also worth noting that, contrary to what people claim, the Corvette hasn’t always had a manual transmission. The Corvette came out in 1953 and didn’t get a manual transmission until 1955.5

4. Base Model Sprints From 0-60 MPH In Under 3 Seconds

When equipped with the Z51 performance package and a driver that feels the need for speed, Chevy says that a base Stingray should hit 60 mph in less than 3 seconds. That is phenomenal when you consider exactly how likely there is to be a Z06 and ZR1 version of the C8 Corvette in the future. The Z51 package will also include improved cooling, larger brakes, and a louder exhaust system.10

1

5. It Has A Special Chassis

The C7, and most generations before, were built as traditional frames using parallel rails running front to back. The C8 Corvette uses a center tunnel structure made of aluminum as a backbone with the front suspension mounted on a subframe. The C8 Corvette does use carbon-fiber, but only where it’s most efficient in terms of cost versus effectiveness. For the base model, there are only two pieces of carbon-fiber being used. One is for a rear bumper beam, and the other is as a close-out panel for the center-tunnel that strengthens the backbone of the car. While the C8 is torsionally stiffer than the outgoing C7, it’s also heavier with a dry weight of 3,366 lbs. That means with fluids, it’ll probably be tip the scales at around 3,600-3,700 lbs.6

6. Pricing Will Start Under $60,000

This is the single largest fact that drops jaws with the C8 Corvette. Chevy is absolutely swinging for the fences, and coming in with that price point changes many a game. For a start, the new Toyota Supracomes in only around $10k cheaper. However, the real gauntlet is being thrown down to the Porsche 718 Cayman, which is a mid-engine car that has a starting price of $57,000. However, that’s with a 4-cylinder engine that makes 300 horsepower. To get to 365 horsepower, and still 130 horses down on the C8, you’re going to spend another $21k for the GTS version.

The only thing left to solidify the C8 Corvette as the performance bargain of the century is finding out its grip and handling abilities. Right now we suspect there are some high-level executives that are very nervous right now across Europe, including Italy.12

7. Initially, There Will Be 3 Suspension Levels

The base configuration is the FE1 trim for the everyday driver that wants to blend his supercar level of performance with enough comfort that they’re not punished for driving it across town or on a commute. FE3 is the next step up, and also retains the conventional suspension system but includes the Z51 Performance package and its electronic limited-slip differential, summer tires, and larger brake discs. For the back road and track day hero, the FE4 package ups the ante by adding magnetorheological adaptive dampers and the challenge of correctly pronouncing that to your friends.

6

8. The Base C8 Is Still Called Stingray

And it actually still makes sense. Despite the new mid-engine layout fundamentally changing the profile of the Corvette, it still contains familiar design elements that let you know it’s a Corvette. The front fenders still come up to a peak, the rear gently bulges out then tucks back in, and the nose has the defining center spear featured. It all adds up to a core of continuity with the previous generations of Corvette despite the fundamental design change.

9. The Interior Is Creating Controversy

Once people have managed to look past the awkward design of the hexagonally shaped steering wheel, there’s also a long string of buttons separating the driver and passenger. As well as re-inventing the wheel, Chevy is not delivering a conventional shifter either. Instead, it’s what Chevy is calling and Electronic Transmission Range Selector, or ETRS for short. Thankfully, they have also supplied conventional paddles behind the wheel for anyone wishing to control the gear changes themselves.5

10. You Can Go Topless

The C8 Corvette has a removable hard-top but those that stuck around to the end of the lengthy reveal event got to see a pre-production version with a foldable soft-top. That means it could just be a few short months before Chevy show the soft-top off for real.

11. It’ll Be Available In Right-Hand Drive

That means it’ll be available, and Chevy plans on making it available, in countries that drive on the wrong side of the road, that could include the UK, Australia, and Japan. Finally, it looks like the Corvette can be enjoyed by the rest of the world for the world-class sports car it is.3

Supercars From Brands Nobody Has Heard Of

How many of these did you know existed?

There’s little doubt that anyone with a passing interest in cars can identify supercars built by Ferrari or Lamborghini. It’s not much of a deeper dive to know whether you’re looking at a McLaren, Porsche, Pagani, or even a Ford GT. Start going deeper under the surface though, and there’s a whole layer of independent and aspiring supercar makers. Dig into supercar history, and there’s a lot that have come and gone again with varying degrees of notoriety.1

Lotec Sirius

The Sirius came onto the road in 2004 built by the German automaker Lotec. Best known for its racing cars, the Lotec road car was almost ten years in the making for the company’s founder Kurt Lotterschmid. Even in modern terms, the numbers backing up the Sirius are staggering. It’s mid-mounted Mercedes-sourced 6.0-liter V12 makes 1,200 horsepower in its most powerful guise and sprints to 60 mph in just 3.8 seconds and to 120 mph in 7.8 seconds. The engine isn’t the only ticket to supercardom for the Sirius, and Lotec poured its race car know-how into every aspect of its design, including the super light carbon-fiber over tubular frame chassis design.4

Ascari KZ1

Ascari Cars was a manufacturer based in the United Kingdom, named after an Italian racing driver and founded by a Dutchman. We’ve talked about the Ascari A10 before, but the KZ1 was in production from 2005-2010 and KZ is the initials for the company’s founder, Klaas Zwart. Production was limited to 50 units and each one took 340 man-hours to build, making it one of the most exclusive supercars around at the time. Those hours included building and tuning the BMW S62 V8 engine from the legendary E39 BMW 5 Series to make 500 horsepower at 7,000 rpm and 406 lb-ft of torque at 4,500 rpm. The KZ1 made 0-60 mph in 3.7 seconds and the 1/4 mile in 11.8 seconds at 124 mph.

The KZ1-R was the racing version, and once anything not needed for the track was stripped out of the carbon-fiber monocoque chassis, it weighed just 2,755.8 lb.1

12

Gumpert Apollo

Gumpert was a German sports car maker headed by the former director of Audi Sport, Roland Gumpert. Gumpert had an enviable track record with Audi and, under his management, the brand won four World Rally Championship titles and 25 World Rally Championship events. The Apollo supercar ended with the company in 2012 but it was one hell of a street-legal race car that held the distinction of holding the Top Gear test track record for two years before being beaten by the Bugatti Veyron Super Sport.

The Apollo used a 4.0-liter twin-turbo version of Audi’s V8 engine that was housed in a tubular Chromoly frame, with either fiberglass or carbon-fibre body panels depending on the required specifications. Gumpert actually claimed the Apollo had aerodynamics so advanced it could be driven upside-down in a tunnel at 190 mph, but nobody has been brave enough to test that claim.7

4

Noble M600

Noble is a small manufacturer from the UK that’s been around since 1999. The company has gone quietly about its business and produced six low production models now, and currently still produces the M600. It’s based, unusually, around a Volvo twin-turbocharged V8 engine and features a carbon-fiber body shell and a 6-speed Yamaha gearbox. The M600’s ferocity and speed edges the M600 towards hypercar territory when optioned out to make 650 horsepower with 604 lb-ft of torque at just 3,800 rpm. 0-60 mph then comes at 2.9 seconds, with 100 mph rushing past at 6.5 seconds, and 200 mph at 29.8 seconds. If you wanted to waste the epic cornering ability of the M600, it’ll do the 1/4 mile in 10.9 seconds.4

6

Vector W8 Twin-Turbo

The story of the Vector W2 is an immense one. If Gerald Wiegert, the creator of the Vector M12 and W8, is to be believed then he invented the modern supercar, was responsible for the deal that got Lamborghini from out under Chrysler, and inspired the twin-turbo engine in the Lamborghini Diablo roadster and Ferrari F40. Oh, and he also invented the minivan and the 4-wheeled ATV.

What can’t be denied is his immense determination to complete a vision. Wiegert raised the capital for an immense supercar to be designed and built in the United States. He allowed little compromise, and the Vector W8 had a list of high-performance features that were breathtaking at the time. It starts with the 625-hp twin-turbo V8 mid-mounted in a semi-monocoque chassis clad in Kevlar-and-carbon-fiber bodywork. The interior included power adjustable seating with lumbar adjustment and a high-end Bosch sound system. 22 units of the W8 Twin-Turbos were made between 1989 and 1993, and we’re all about those horizontal lines across the rear.

8

Zenvo TS1-GT

Zenvo is a Danish supercar manufacturer that was founded by Troels Vollertsen. Zenvo made its first mark on the world of supercars in 2008 with the debut of the Zenvo ST1, of which 15 were built to be sold. The TS1-GT is built on the ST1’s foundations, but got a new designation for it’s all-new drivetrain that includes an in-house developed 5.8-liter twin-supercharged V8 engine and a 7-speed paddle shift transmission that uses helical-cut dog gears. Production started in 2016, and the TS1-GT has a claimed 0-60 mph time of 3.0 seconds. It also has a track-focused version called the TSR, which in turn has its own road-legal version called the TSR-S. Like the original ST1, your bank account needs to have at least six zeroes on it to order the TS1-GT.

6

Arash AF8

The UK has a rich history of supercars, and while McLaren is a household name, most have been small concerns aiming for the stars but destined for bankruptcy. At this point, the British parts-bin supercar designed and built in a small corner of an industrial estate is a British institution. Arash Motor Company is one of the companies that hasn’t gone out of business and after 20 years as a boutique supercar company, is selling the AF8. It was revealed in 2015 and uses a GM-sourced 7.0-liter LS7 V8 making 550 horsepower that’s mounted in a chassis constructed with steel, aluminum, and carbon-fiber. We love that is comes with a 6-speed manual transmission and that a unique selling point for the AF8 is the Kevlar and carbon-fiber floor that provides “ballistic” protection from stones and debris being kicked up.

7

Vencer Sarthe

The Vencor Sarthe is the product of a dream inspired by early visits to Le Mans by Vencer’s Dutch founder Robert Cobben with his parents. He named his supercar after the local name of the track and did his best to capture the spirit of the racing when Silk Cut Jaguars and the Porsche 956 were shooting down a chicane-free Mulsanne straight. To that end, the Sarthe has a manual transmission and little in the way of electronic gadgetry to help control the 622-hp and 618 lb-ft of torque from the Hennessey-tuned 6.3-liter V8. By little electronic gadgetry, we mean it doesn’t have any traction control at all.

Cobben never intended to make many units of the Sarthe, but he wanted to make the best car he possibly could. As a result, Vencer makes its own carbon-fiber then turns it into body panels because Cobben couldn’t find anyone to make what he wanted to his own price and quality requirements.

8

Mega Track

The company name is actually called Mega, and it’s an offshoot of the French car brand Axiam who are now owned by Polaris. In the history of supercars, this is up there with anything built during the wondrously absurd largess of the early 1990s. The Track is as long as a Mercedes S-Class and almost as wide as a Hummer, and, as you can see in the pictures, it’s crazy tall for a supercar. The reason for that is it had 20-inch wheels and an adjustable suspension system that could raise it from 8 inches of ground clearance to 13 inches for going off pavement. When you take into account the all-wheel-drive system, that sounds like the first crossover supercar to us.

If that’s not absurd enough, power was provided by a 6.0-liter Mercedes-Benz V12. The project was mismanaged though, and it’s claimed 11 were actually built and released into the wild rather than the more often reported five.

10

SSC Ultimate Aero

American supercars aren’t common, but when they happen they always go big and the Ultimate Aero TT was the car that held the Guinness production car speed record until it was taken by the Bugatti Veyron Super Sport in 2010. SSC was founded by Jerod Shelby and originally named Shelby SuperCar until a dispute was resolved with the unrelated racing icon Caroll Shelby over licensing. The Ultimate Aero came with a supercharged Chevrolet Corvette C5R V8 engine making 1,046 hp and 821 lb-ft of torque and topped out at 249 mph. The record-breaking TT version clocked 256.14 mph for its record.

9

9ff GT9

Ruf is a well-known name in automotive circles, but the tuning company 9ff has also been rebuilding and turning already crazy Porsches into lunatic level Porsches for some time. The 2007 GT9 is based on the 993 GT3, but takes the heavily modified engine and mounts it in the middle. The engine is a work of flat-6 engineering art, and in top spec makes 1,120 hp and propels the GT9 to its top speed of 254 mph. That’s faster than a Bugatti Veyron but not as fast as the SSC Ultimate Aero TT or Bugatti Veyron Super Sport. 9ff then made a high-performance version with the GT9-R to try and claim the street-legal car record from Bugatti, but the claimed 260 mph speed was never tested. In total, 150 GT9 models were produced, and all sold before release. 20 models of the GT9-R were built.

Top 10 best seling cars in the World -2019

Crossovers aren’t our overlords… yet.

We try not to have a myopic view of the car world. It’s easy to think the country that you’re based in is the center of the universe, but the world is round and sales are global. At the same time, models don’t make it to every market but, as we’ll see in this list, the cars in the top ten tend to be sold far and wide. There are a few exceptions though, and that’s not all that makes this list marking the first part of the year so fascinating. The numbers we’ve used here come from the Global Auto Database and from the beginning of the year through May. Something else the numbers show is that the decline in overall automobile sales in 2018 is continuing as a trend. The first quarter of the year showed a decline of 7.4% with 21,009,192 global sales in total. That’s 1,554,680 down over the previous year.

There is some predictability, but there’s also some head-scratching information here if we base what we expect on what we see in our own countries.9

1. Toyota Corolla – 282,637

It’s easy to get caught up in the whole idea of what we see locally with crossovers dominating the market, particularly here in the US where they are king along with trucks. It seems, though, that across the broad spectrum of personal income on a global scale mixed with the practicality of larger vehicles, a humble and small gas-powered car is still a recipe for big success. And now, it’s possible to actually get excited by a Corolla.16

2. Ford F-Series – 252,013

Some people cry foul at the sales success of the F-Series truck, and the argument is solid. After all, there are various models of F-Series trucks and the Super Duty line is built on a different architecture. If Toyota renamed the Camry as the larger Corolla, Toyota would probably dominate global sales by an even larger stretch. They could even go as far as renaming the RAV4 as the Corolla SUV as well and go bragging like Ford does. However, no matter which way you slice it, the F-Series is at number two on the list despite not having an official presence in most of Europe or Asia, and that’s impressive. In 2018, an F-Series truck was sold every 35 seconds on average.15

3. Honda Civic – 203,103

Whether you think of the Civic as Honda’s Corolla or the Corolla as Toyota’s Civic, this was always going to rank highly. What’s interesting is that there’s not a crossover in the top three. Honda’s recipe for the Civic as being economical to run, practical to use, available in useful and sporty configurations, and fun to drive secures its place at the top end of the global market.

5

4. Honda CR-V – 190,319

The best selling crossover worldwide at the moment runs contrary to what we saw here in the United States last year. The Honda CR-V was outsold by both the Toyota RAV4 and the Nissan Rogue in 2018, but for the first quarter of 2019 the CR-V outsold the RAV4 stateside, and both have been outsold by Chevy’s Equinox. The Rogue outsold them all in the US but hasn’t made the top 10 for global sales so far this year.

5. Toyota RAV4 – 190,118

The RAV4 has been around since 1994, and there was an EV version all the way back in 1997 produced for fleets until 2003. The RAV4 also holds the distinction of being the first compact crossover SUV, and that’s something Toyota has built upon over decades now.

9

6. Volkswagen Golf – 177,503

The hatchback hasn’t had the success in the United States as it has in the rest of the world. Lots of space, big roads, and cheap gas negate a lot of the benefits of a small yet practical vehicle. The Golf has been available here, but an upmarket hatch doesn’t sell well. As a result it seems, the next generation won’t be available in the United States. For the rest of the world, the Golf reigns supreme as the premium hatchback.

9

7. Volkswagen Tiguan – 173,058

It shouldn’t be a surprise Volkswagen also has a compact SUV in the list. Part of the Tiguan’s success is down to the Chinese market where it’s been available since 2009. China is a large part of Volkswagen’s overall market with around 40% of the brand’s revenue coming from Asia.

8. Volkswagen Polo – 167,888

Volkswagen’s baby hatchback is now in its sixth generation and post-dates the Golf by just a year. There have been other body styles, and there’s a sedan version built in Brazil for the South American market named the Virtus. However, Volkswagen has yet to find a business case for selling it in the United States.

9. Toyota Camry – 164,158

The Toyota Camry beats out the Honda Accord in worldwide sales and keeps a mid-size sedan presence in the top 10 world sales list. Now in its eighth generation, Toyota’s decision to go with a much more aggressive and sportier style is paying off. Toyota calls the Camry its second “World Car” after the Corolla, and it’s built in Japan, China, India, Malaysia, Russia, Taiwan, Thailand, and the United States.

10. Volkswagen Lavida – 143,686

Commonly known by English speakers as the Lavida, while being the first car designed by VW’s Chinese branch, it’s clearly a no-frills Passat for the Chinese market. It’s also clearly a big deal for VW as it makes the world sales list despite only being made in China. According to figures available from 2018, VW sold 473,564 units in total last year. It also appears to be on track for the biggest jump in ranking for global sales after ending 2018 in 17th place while all the other cars on this list were in the top 10 overall.

Mercedes-Benz Preparing The Electric EQE Saloon in 2022

The new upmarket saloon is scheduled to go on sale in 2022 and will compete directly with the Tesla Model S in terms of price. Details of the EQE have been cited in documents recently made public by the Chinese Ministry of Information and Technology in which the EQE is referred to under its internal codename, V295.

The EQE is one of 10 new electric models destined for sale from Mercedes under its EQ sub-brand by the end of 2025 in a development programme already budgeted to cost up to €10 billion (£8.7bn).

On top of this, the German car maker has announced the investment of a further €20bn (£17.4bn) in battery cell technology. Electric models are expected to account for more than a quarter of all Mercedes’ sales by the middle of the next decade. Zetsche said: “Our electric offensive continues to gain momentum. We are now taking the next step.”

The EQE will follow the recently introduced EQC, next year’s new EQA and EQV, the flagship EQS and the recently confirmed EQB into Mercedes showrooms in the UK.

A sibling model to the larger and more luxurious EQS due out in 2021, the EQE will also be the second Mercedes to be based on the company’s new MEA electric car platform. Set to make extensive use of aluminium, it is designed to give future EQ electric models a flat floor structure for added packaging flexibility and what Mercedes insiders have described as “class-leading interior space”.
One source said: “The EQE will be shorter in length than today’s E-Class but offer space comparable to the existing S-Class.”

As our image shows, the EQE will evolve the shape of the upcoming facelifted E-Class with a focus on aerodynamic efficiency. It will adopt a face inspired by the rest of the EQ line-up, and is expected to sit lower to the ground with a ride height adjusting depending on the road conditions.
